Perm or Texturizer After Care
Gone are the days of the infamous poodle perms. And although many of us are glad and hope to never see them again, perms are back in a big way. The perms of today, called “texturizers,” are not you mother’s perm. They are formulated to be gentle to the hair and to match specific hair types. New application techniques allow for a variety of modern, classic, and trendy looks that add fullness and body to a hair style. With all these fantastic changes and new products many people assume that the rules for the after care of a texturizer have changed as well. But the have not! When a texturizer is applied, the hair is shaped around rods or other shaping implements and chemically processed to change the structure of the hair. This process allows the hair to develop a memory of the new shape and that memory is susceptible to change for 48-hours after the treatment is complete. So to get the most out of your new texturizer and avoid damaging your hair follow these rules.
- Never wet, brush, bind or shampooyour hair for the first 48-hours. Binding includes pony tails, hats, hair pins, or clips. Your hair will retain the shape you put it in. Wetting or washing your hair will cause it to be frizzy and it will lose it’s new shape.
- Gently use a wide tooth comb to remove tangles. Avoid brushes as this will pull the shape out of the hair and cause it to be frizzy.
- After the 48-hour resting period, shampoo and condition with a product formulated for treated or curly hair.
- Always use a leave-in protectant on towel dry hair before you style. This both protects and nourishes the hair keeping it healthy, shiny and manageable. I recommend K-Pak Leave-In Protectant.
