To avoid any corrective color during the Halloween and Holiday season, follow these tips to avoid a color disaster and protect your hair.

Remember that black or colorful spray on colors can and will stain naturally light hair, even if the product assures that it is only temporary.  This is especially true for highlighted or lightened hair because the hair becomes more porous during the chemical process.  So it is always better to opt for a wig or hairpiece instead of the temporary color.  Yes they are uncomfortable, but the discomfort is only temporary and is better than paying for the corrective color that may require you to change your hair color to a darker shade or a shorter style.  And they prevent you from having to wear your botched color during the Holiday Season.

If you must use the temporary color, follow these steps to help minimize the risk to welfare of your hair color.  The most important thing to remember is that exposure of the cuticle to the dye in the Halloween color will result in transfer of the dye to the hair.  again this is especially visible in lighter base colors and almost guaranteed in chemically processed hair.  With this in mind, our goal is to protect the cuticle from the dye by creating a barrier between the dye and your hair.  The best method to create this barrier is intended for color that will be washed out at the end of the night.  Start by applying a compact or loose make-up powder to your hair that is two shades darker than your natural color.  then apply hair spray to the layer of make-up to fix it in place.  Finally apply the temporary color.

When you are ready to remove the color, use a chelating or deep cleansing shampoo until the water rinses clear, you may need to repeat this procedure more than once.  Follow up with a deep conditioning treatment left on for at least five minutes to replace the moisture and luster lost during the cleansing process.
